D. Brooks Smith

David Brookman Smith (born December 4, 1951 in Altoona, Pennsylvania), known professionally as D. Brooks Smith, is a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Federal Service

Smith was nominated to the Third Circuit by President George W. Bush on September 10, 2001 to fill a seat vacated by Judge Timothy K. Lewis. The U.S. Senate confirmed his nomination on July 31, 2002 by a vote of 64-35. Previously, Smith served as the Chief Judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and as a Commonwealth prosecutor. Smith was appointed to that court in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan, where he served until his elevation to the Third Circuit.

Education

Smith received a B.A. from Franklin and Marshall College in 1973, and a J.D. from Penn State Dickinson School of Law in 1976.
